There’s nothing like enjoying a hot shower after a long day at work in Monroe, WA. If you notice that your water isn’t as hot as you’d like it to be, the good news is that changing the temperature is relatively easy. Anytime you do something with your water heater, you want to be sure that you do it safely. That’s why it’s a good idea to check out this guide from ProMax Water Heaters & Plumbing to help you properly adjust your water heater’s temperature.

Electric Water Heaters

Newer electric water heaters often have a temperature knob located on top of the unit. You can simply rotate this knob to select your desired water temperature. Other electric water heaters require you to remove one of the service covers on the front of the water heater. After removing this cover, you will also need to remove the insulation behind the cover to find the temperature adjustment knob. You can use a screwdriver to rotate this knob left or right to adjust the temperature.

Gas Water Heaters

Adjusting the temperature on most gas water heaters is quite straightforward. These units should have a knob near the bottom that controls the gas valve. All you have to do is rotate this knob left or right to adjust the temperature. Most of these knobs will have markings so that you can see the estimated temperature of the water as you’re adjusting the knob.

Checking the Temperature

If you increase the water temperature in your water heater, check the temperature with a thermometer after the water heater has a chance to bring the water to the desired temperature. ProMax Water Heaters & Plumbing recommends keeping the water temperature at 120 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid scalding. Lower temperatures could allow bacteria to grow in your water heater and cause illness in your family, so monitoring the temperature carefully is essential.
