Signs You Need a New Water Heater

If you don't know how old your water heater is, look at its serial number. After the letter, the next two numbers will tell you

Your water heater will usually show some signs that it’s on its last legs and you’ll soon need to replace it. Keep your eyes out for these signs so that you can replace it before it completely fails.

It’s 10 Years Old

Most water heaters last eight to 10 years. While yours may last longer, once it’s a decade old, you should think about replacing it. It will probably fail soon, and it’s better to proactively handle the situation instead of dealing with an emergency.

If you don’t know how old your water heater is, look at its serial number. After the letter, the next two numbers will tell you its age. For example, if the serial number starts with S11, then its production year was 2011.

Visible Rust

If you see rust on your water heater, it’s usually a sign that it’s rusted on the inside. A water heater has an inner tank that holds the water and an outer one that helps keep the water hot. Rust on the outer tank usually means the inside tank is rusty, cracked, and leaking.

Frequent Repairs

If your water heater needs more than two repairs a year, you’re better off buying a new one. The money going toward frequent repairs can be better put to use replacing it.

Water Leaks From the Tank

If you see water on the top of the tank, that usually means a pipe connection has come loose. Water that’s coming from the side of the tank means it’s sprung a leak. You should replace your water heater as soon as possible to prevent a total failure.
